Find an activity, use the reading tools, or back up your progress.
Start learning
The five-minute lesson introduces anaphora and antithesis. Then compare sentences or select evidence and explain an effect. Compare your writing with a model, then check it against the review questions. Writing is not automatically graded.
Unaided analysis hides the device names until you submit a reading. Context exercises change the setting around the same words. Save revisions alongside your first response, and return to a short practice session and review calendar. Rehearsal saves two speaking reflections; optional recordings stay in the tab until downloaded.
Choose an activity
Look up definitions and examples, or compare devices that are easy to confuse. The Gallery of Errors shows how techniques can fail and how to revise them.
Search passages, group them by era or author, or follow a reading trail. Open a passage to examine its wording.
Practice naming devices, comparing sentences, and explaining effects. Use the Device Forge to try writing devices or make a printable quiz for a class.
Choose a speaking drill and follow a partner’s signals or use solo mode. For a warm-up, deal a topic, audience, and constraint from the Prompt Deck.

On a passage page
- Hover a marked phrase to see its device; click to pin the card. The colored chips toggle whole families of underlines.
- Walk through it steps through selected passages one device at a time.
- Test yourself hides the annotations so you can select words yourself, then compares your selections with the annotated words.
- Print handout prints the passage with a device key.
- Share a highlighted device. Pin it, then copy the page address.
- Some passages have a Sentence Architecture panel showing how the clauses fit together.
In the School

- Review my misses repeats questions you answered incorrectly. Two correct answers remove a question from this list.
- Save or share a quiz setup by bookmarking or copying the page address.
- Drill this device starts a quiz on that device and similar ones.
Finding things
- Ctrl+K (⌘K on a Mac) — or the magnifier in the header — opens quick search over every passage, device, and drill, from any page.
- The Reader index has full-text search and a device filter: every passage containing, say, chiasmus.

Your data
Your answers, drafts, and progress are saved in this browser. Use Settings to download a backup, restore one, or reset your progress. Download recordings separately before leaving their tab; backups do not include them.
