Metalepsis
A reference that depends on a chain of figurative associations. In narrative, the term also describes a crossing between levels, such as a character addressing the author.
"I have drunk milk from the cow that scattered the seed" — reaching an idea through chained figures
Don't confuse it with Metonymy. Simple metonymy makes one associative hop; metalepsis needs at least two. The narrative sense (frame-breaking) is the common modern usage.
Examples
The detective stepped out of chapter six and ordered the novelist to rewrite his death.
A character crosses from the story’s world into the level occupied by its author.
