Assonance
Repeating vowel sounds in nearby words — the deep green sea. Long vowels slow a line down; short ones speed it up. It binds lines together below conscious notice.
"in Xanadu did Kubla Khan / A stately pleasure-dome decree" — the a's and u's
Don't confuse it with Alliteration. Alliteration repeats initial consonants; consonance repeats consonants anywhere; assonance is vowels only.
